So. I just can't help it I guess. I grew up around country music for the better part of my first 7 or 8 years, maybe more. My Dad listened to it. My granddad listened to it. Well, I'd guess just about everyone I knew did. My dad and his brothers had it on all the time on the radio in their Garage fixin' cars (a side business). Gramps played it driving in his Jeep Cherokee and on a small transistor as he tinkered in the barn.
It was a small country town, my hometown: a Main street, 5 and dime store, firehouse, coupla bars, and mountains in the distance. Hell, we lived on one. Mountain that is. (Actually our old house is still there, but not so visible from the highway now.)
Anyway... I digress. Country was all I knew, for the most part. Patsy (Cline), George (Jones), Johnny (Cash), Hank (Williams), Porter Wagoner (this was back when Dolly Parton was still part of the Porter Wagoner show)--- you get the idea.
For some reason, whenever I hear that particular brand of Country--you know the one...real twangy as opposed to the more contemporary, cross-over stuff--I often think of toolin around the countryside or into town with Dad in the old red Ford. We'd hop in the truck after supper--NOT dinner, supper--and head down to Tillie's for popsicles. I think it was really just an excuse to get out of the house for awhile since Mom usually didn't go along. Dad would shoot the shit with Tillie for a bit. I got a sugar fix. So we both won, I guess. It goes without saying that Tillie ALWAYS had some Country streaming from the old 8-track behind the counter. (OK, I remember 8-tracks, so sue me.)
I mention all this as I was perusing the trusty ol' iTunes (much better than the 8-track by the way) for something diff, something I hadn't heard in awhile. And I found this little gem. This is EXACTLY that twangy sound that brings back those days. (Course the real thing does too. My affinity for Patsy Cline proves that.) So... I'm diggin a Country moment. Reminds me of Dad, of Tillies, and other days.
addendum: What do you get when you play country music backwards?
You get your heart back, you get your wife back, you get your job back, you get your....
